We were honored to be cordially received by Premier Cho Jung-tai for a constructive exchange of views.
Premier Cho referred to China’s so-called “Ten Preferential Measures” for Taiwan as a basket of fruit that can be repeatedly offered but withdrawn at any time, highlighting the need for continued vigilance given the uncertainty and past impacts of such policies.
The Association expressed strong support for the government’s policy direction, while also noting concern that Taiwan’s 2026 national budget has yet to be approved by the Legislature. We also expressed high expectations for the endorsement of the proposed US$40 billion special defense budget to further strengthen Taiwan’s defense resilience. In addition, we emphasized the importance of the 111 HIMARS systems and the T-Dome air defense system in enhancing Taiwan’s asymmetric defense capabilities.
Minister Hsu of the Overseas Community Affairs Council recognized the contributions of the Melbourne Taiwanese community. Members also proposed establishing an Overseas Community Cultural and Educational Center in Melbourne to strengthen cultural exchange and engagement with younger generations.
The Premier noted Melbourne’s growing strategic importance as a major Australian city, and we strongly encourage deeper Taiwan–Victoria cooperation to further strengthen long-term bilateral ties.
